People are not problems to be solved

People are not problems to be solved. They are mysteries to be explored.
— Eugene Peterson

“But people aren’t simple. We are not problems that, with a click of our fingers, can suddenly be fixed.”

Clients and clinicians in our industry are frequently seduced by the idea of a quick fix, a life-hack, or a 5-step solution to better health.

“Most of us instinctively know that there are no five-step solutions to the challenges in our life. What we need is not some promise of an illusory quick fix; instead we need someone who will walk alongside us, no matter what, for better or for worse. Most of us don’t long to be fixed, we long to be known”

This goes a long way to explaining why the 5 E’s of non-specific effects from the previous post (see The Kettlebell Physio) are so important:

ENGAGE – build a professional partnership in a warm and friendly manner, show interest, curiosity and concern, understand expectations

EMPATHISE – listen and reflect understanding, acknowledge feelings, values and thoughts

EDUCATE – check understanding and address concerns, be compassionate, discuss the likely steps ahead

ENLIST – seek the patient’s input, ask for agreement and active participation, provide options and negotiate priorities

END – summarise what’s happened and review, express confidence, caring and hope, follow through.

– Anything in life worth having is worth working for
– If you are persistent, you will get it. if you are consistent, you will keep it.
